The Republican Party Is A Farce of Sincerity
In an objective sense, Democrats 100% deserve to keep the House for two more years.
I was thinking today about how media on the political Right is a farce of sincerity.
Specifically, I was remembering the controversy following President Biden’s Press Secretary Jen Psaki leaving to work for MSNBC. The media on the Right insisted that it proves Democrats have an incestual relationship with the mainstream media, as if Donald Trump’s Administration and Fox News were not a revolving door for each other.
As if all the opinion hosts at Fox don’t have regular phone calls with Donald Trump, and text him daily during his months-long coup conspiracies, and didn’t text him even in the middle of his deadly insurrection hail mary attempt to stay in the White House.
As if Fox doesn’t provide pavlovian cover for Republicans 24/7, and hide and ignore all negativity about Republicans’ political interests unless an individual Republican official is breaking from the party’s Tucker Carlson-approved groupthink.
What angers me is how performatively Republicans act in bad faith because the Right wing media rallies around Donald Trump as Dear Leader over every issue du jour with instinctual loyalty to party zealotry.
The Republican Party is sending this country off the ledge as Republicans off the record admit Donald Trump is utterly unfit to drive the car. There are many capable drivers in the car with him waiting to take over, yet nobody is courageously willing to say a thing as he careens back and forth toward the edge.
And in Congress, there is an unwieldy stool with three legs of theocratic fundamentalists, the monied and corporate, and paleoconservatives operating under various delusions like QAnon, admiration for Vladimir Putin, and ethno-nationalism that have made legislative progress in America almost impossible.
Imagine for a moment Republicans had Congressional power a few weeks ago. Do you think they might have impulsively voted to defund the FBI after the search and seizure of Mar-a-Lago for the top secret documents Trump had no right to be holding onto at a country club? Would they do it to save their Dear Leader?
Like I said, legislative progress is almost impossible. I believe there would be enough Republicans to vote with all the Democrats to ensure the FBI isn’t just overnight abolished. I can’t imagine Mitch McConnell would vote for that, or would fail in whipping votes from the dwindling but still substantial number of GOP senators who actually like the ideas of democracy and peaceful transfers of power.
But the GOP’s extreme narcissists who will do and say anything to keep riding the wave of “Maybe I’ll someday get to be president” would certainly vote to defund the FBI. Senators like Josh Hawley, Tom Cotton, and Ted Cruz. And be joined in support by other opportunistic presidential aspirants, such as Nikki Haley and Kristi Noem.
And then that vote perhaps would mark the next election’s litmus test in the primaries. Would the offending Republican members of Congress join the list with John Boehner, Paul Ryan, and Liz Cheney of party traitors who committed the ultimate crime of making a deal with Democrats to not wreck or handicap our country’s national interests in pursuit of partisan absurdity?
In an objective sense, Democrats 100% deserve to keep the House for two more years. I hope voters realize that. Republicans offer almost no constructive participation in solving society’s problems. Their unofficial platform (because their official platform is somehow “Do whatever Donald Trump wants”) is essentially:
“Arm everyone, and militarize our schools, and while we’re at it monitor every teacher to catch them when they start trying to brainwash our children with Critical Race Theory, socialism, and drag queen librarians telling them to be trans.”
I mean, I’m not wrong. That’s literally what they talk about in all their campaign videos, in between camera shots of them shooting things and threatening people. And that’s what Fox News and talk radio blare on about all day as spigots of fear, paranoia, and Dear Leader styled propaganda.
I hope the gutting of abortion rights are a loud, siren call for voters to wake up from a nap of political apathy. It’s a vision of the dark society Republicans will continue abandoning political norms to mandate we live in.
And the sad part is there’s effectively no equivalent on the Left to the Right’s deep underground echo chamber silo of media grievance. The media is actually disastrously asymmetric. It shows in so many ways.
Democrats don’t go to Biden rallies, and spit on Fox News reporters, or buy Biden shirts, hats, and flags.
Biden doesn’t call into CNN or MSNBC daily to rant with virtually no pushback on any of his claims about how unfair everyone is being to him.
Biden doesn’t personally get advice from Rachel Maddow while he’s actively trying to incite his supporters to publicly hang Kamala Harris. There is no both-sides-ing the media in degree of partisan derangement.
And then, before you go, take a moment to reflect on how Democrats are projected to not win the House, but Democrats in elections across the country are not screaming about how everything’s rigged ahead of time.
The political Right is a farce of sincerity.
