No just stop given the idea of an open convention any oxygen. The chaos by changing the nominee will do unheard damage. Talk about how badly trump lied and how the ‘debate’ gave him a platform. It will not be okay no matter who you choose. The media would have a field day, they downplay any good the Democrats do and amplify every bad story they can.
Kudos on the very rational fears. This election is so important that we're really going to ask ourselves "What if?" if we keep Biden and he loses, or we replace him and he loses. And even if he wins, does a second Biden Administration have what it takes to meet the moment of Trump launching another coup to stay out of prison?
No fury, this is a great article. Thoughtful and on point. I too will vote Biden, but if there’s an open convention, I’ll get behind whoever the nominee is. Josh Shapiro would be a good choice, but so would the others mentioned. Project 2025 is not, nor will it ever be, an option.
Honestly, the best polling part of this election is that voters did NOT want a Biden-Trump rematch, so if all of a sudden Democrats offered a calm, reasonable, capable, young middle aged person without much time for Republicans to invent all kinds of conspiracy theories about, that might be a very winning ticket!
Thanks for your perspective. My wife and I are Biden voters, Blue voters, no matter who. I don't at all mind us all down here in the peanut gallery talking options if Biden can't hack it. But...
1) What are the currently unknown skeletons in all the alternatives' closets, which MAGA will be too glad to ratfuck?
2) Treating a minority female like Kalama Harris as a ho-hum option, to be bypassed, I think could be a serious problem for minority voters.
3) Putting up another white male voter, even one like Josh Shapiro (who we adore), won't do much to get those missing/weak minority voters engaged.
4) I like Whitmer a lot, but don't know if she has what it takes to run a national campaign.
5) At this late hour, how would a Biden/Harris campaign move its remaining momentum and significant war chest to another candidate pairing?
To answer those questions, I would like to see all potential alternatives on the road beating the shit out of Trump/MAGA ahead of the convention. But where are they? The non-swing states all feel like we do, they are either solid blue or solid red, so need little attention, although not no attention (are you listening, Hillary?)
Why aren't we seeing Blue PAC money funding mini rallies in the swing states with the likes of Harris (as lead surrogate), and with guest speakers including (choose from) Buttigieg, Whitmer, Newsom, Cooper, Pritzker, Polis, Shapiro, Healey, Kelly, Moore, and Beshear. Let's get those people out in front of Biden or Harris at EVERY swing-state opportunity. That early air time will either strengthen Biden/Harris, or at least get the others better known to the masses, as the locals and various MSM sound bites will pick up snippets.
As a digression, I want to know why the Blue PACs haven't put on tour the collection of Never Trumpers, esp. generals who served with Trump and fear another Trump term. All their memoirs are meaningless unless they get out and stump for Blue candidates, and by that I mean continued democracy in America. But don't get me started.
